The Rebels improve to 4-2 in the region and 5-3 overall, while the Cougars slip to 4-2 and 5-4.
“Our defense in the second half was more aggressive,” Franklin Coach Craig Clayton said.
It was anyone’s game through the first three quarters with Dickson jumping out to an early 3-0 lead off a 23-yard field goal by Dustin Moore.
A fumble recovery by Franklin set up a scoring drive to put the Rebels ahead, when quarterback Graham Nichols put the ball up for Keylo Lee to pull down for a touchdown with 10:59 left in the second quarter.
Five minutes later, Anthony Steele would score the first of three touchdowns to stretch the Rebels’ lead to 14-3. Steele would finish the game with 175 yards off 23 carries.
The Cougars battled back to tie the game, 17-17 in the third, off a touchdown run by quarterback John Primm. Dickson County then took back the lead when an interception by Justin Adams set up a 22-yard field goal by Moore, and the Cougars went up 20-17.
But the Rebels stayed focused and powered by Steele’s runs, Franklin would score three more times on their way to a victory.
“We could have hung it up when we got behind in the third quarter, but we just kept going toe-to-toe at them,” said Clayton.
The Cougars struggled with penalties that broke their momentum more than once.
“We had some big turnovers and didn’t move the ball consistently some times. We gave up two fumbles deep to give them 14 points real easy,” Cougar Coach Jackie Bledsoe said. “You can’t make mistakes like that. They played hard though.”
