Brentwood wins in second OT by Chip Cirillo The Tennesean

BRENTWOOD — Tate Mustin described it as “crazy.”

No one will argue with that, as his fumble recovery on the final play of the second overtime sealed Brentwood’s 27-24 victory over Franklin in front of an overflow crowd Friday night.

“Oh, my God, I’m so happy,” Mustin said as he celebrated with teammates. “I guess I was just in the right place at the right time. One of my teammates got the hit and the ball came out. I saw it and grabbed it.”

Travas Lenard caused Anthony Steele’s fumble at Brentwood’s 5-yard line, and Mustin scooped it up from his spot at outside linebacker. Rebels Coach Craig Clayton said he thought the official had whistled the play dead.

“It’s great for our confidence, especially because we feel like we didn’t play well last week,” Bruins Coach Ron Crawford said. “We knew we were a good football team. We’ve lost a couple close ones. Finally, we get a break.”

Andrew Coley’s 22-yard field goal in the second OT gave Brentwood (2-4, 2-1 Region 6-5A) the dramatic win.

Both teams scored touchdowns in the first overtime: Brentwood on an 8-yard pass from A.J. Krow to Cameron Mason and Franklin (2-3, 1-2) on a 1-yard run by Steele.

Brentwood took a 17-7 lead early in the fourth quarter before Franklin stormed back, sending the game into OT on a 1-yard run by Steele on fourth and goal with 1:16 left.

“We played so bad early, and I think the layoff killed us,” Clayton said. “We were 10 points down, and then we played really well.”

Franklin took a 7-0 lead on a controversial 58-yard punt return by Casey Dykes with 6:50 left in the first quarter. It appeared Dykes signaled for a fair catch, and players from both teams stopped. Then Dykes raced for the end zone, drawing an angry response from the Brentwood coaches on the sideline when the officials allowed the play to stand.

Andrew Coley kicked a 25-yard field goal that narrowed Franklin’s lead to 7-3 with five seconds left in the first half.

Michael Regan scored on a 3-yard run up the middle, giving Brentwood a 10-7 lead with 7:07 left in the third quarter. The touchdown came two plays after A.J. Krow threw a 48-yard pass to Chase Lyle.

The Bruins scored again on their next possession as Krow ran it in from 5 yards out, boosting Brentwood’s lead to 17-7 with 10:29 left.

Tim Donegan kicked a 22-yard field goal, narrowing Brentwood’s lead to 17-10 with 7:12 left.

Anthony Steele’s 1-yard run on fourth-and-goal tied the score 17-17 for the Rebels with 1:16 left.
